Your website is pivotal to your marketing activities and perception of your brand. A consistent and cohesive icon set conveys professionalism and a commitment to good user experience. Successful organisations like Microsoft, Google, and Apple all have frameworks that empower design teams to create consistent icons.
As business goals evolve, new messaging and features need to be communicated. To illustrate and signpost this changing content, new icons are often required. As a matter of expediency, generic icons or a badly designed set is forced into an existing design. This inevitably leads to different styles of icons across an organisation's touchpoints which undermines your brand.
The existing icons were downloaded from the current Microsoft site and attributes such as the stroke width, grid, and style examined. These attributes were used as a base to create a new set of icons which visually aligned to the current set. The new icons illustrate several key benefits of Microsoft Partner's Onesurface campaign. These benefits included technical features of the devices, reduced IT costs, eco-credentials, built-in security etc.
The icons were exported in a range of vector file formats allowing them to be used in a wide range of digital scenarios such as websites and presentation decks. Documentation in the form of a style guide was produced to allow the set to be developed further as when new icons were needed. This approach enables Graphic Designers to create additional icons in the future. Having access to the style guide ensures that new icons are consistent with the current set.
